DESIGN TIMES - THE FOOD DESIGN ISSUE

It seems I am still suffering pleasant backlash from the Cape Town trip, the balance of this post will explain why.

One of the dynamic minds that I met at the Design Indaba is one behind a publication which I hold in high esteem. His name is Mark Rosenburg, founder/ editor of Design Times.

I recall my first meet with him; as I stretched my arm to offer my respect for an outstanding peice of work, he, to my surprise had perused the very blog which you are reading right now. So you gather it was a golden moment.
A few minutes later, I walked away holding the latest issue of my favourite magazine in the country and more importantly, a commission for his upcoming issue. Mark told me that his next issue is on food and would like to include my mid-sized article. During the time, I was fascinated at the experience and escapism that a well curated restuarant offers the discerning patron. And how some restaurants just cut corners and jeorpodise their brand as a consequence. Hence my topic;
THE FACE FACE OF THE RESTAURANT -will be posted in a 2 months

Back to the Design Times, Mark has called upon a diverse and strong dose of creative contributors. Some of the names are; Matthew Bax, Francesco Tonelli, Beatrice Peltre, Andrew Stellitano and Dominic Davies. You can may get your copy at Exclusive Books.

LUNCH ON THE STREETS - FLORIDA rd Durban

Just last month, the Fork, Knife and Glass took the idea to Cape Town hosting the first ever dinner outside of its birth city. Amongst the invited was a copyrighter, an illustrator, a hip hop activist, a social activist, a product designer and curator. The group got together at the warm abode of Jade De Waal in picturesque Gardens/ Tamboerskloof. It was a night of great conversation, warm company and delectable food to be remembered.

Right on the heels of that success, we flew the idea back home and hosted a lunch on the streets of busy Florida road. The objective was to place a well decked out lunch table at a public space which citizens would not generally associate with dining. The lunch celebrated the touch point of ‘’street pop up’’ and cultured dining, the concept also encourages a local movement that chooses a sense of communalism over individualism. The gathering was done in collaboration with the progressive Spiga D Oro eatery.
The guests received an email with a link to their invite on Vimeo;
 Upon viewing the invite, the guests reserved their seats and got dining on a Saturday afternoon.
THE VIDEO IS IN THE FINAL STAGE OF EDITING, VISIT AGAIN IN TWO DAYS!

FORK, KNIFE & GLASS IN CAPE TOWN - WITH FOOD JAMS

Just about three weeks ago, I updated a post about the Design Indaba at which I was reporting. And if you follow the blog close enough, you would remember the Durban leg of the Food Jams which we hosted for Jade De Waal. Being the good lady she is, Jade sent me an open invite to host the Fork, Knife & Glass in the mother city. So my trip to Cape Town was to meet creatives, spark collaborations and soak the Cape Town vibe. All objectives were met and the most remarkable was hosting the Fork, Knife & Glass concept in Cape Town. The dinner club has always had the intention of bringing together creatives from multiple disciplines and this came together just perfectly in Cape Town. It was so humbling and inspiring to be surrounded by individuals who do amazing work yet take no compliments.

The evening consisted of a copywriter, a hip hop activist, a product designer, an illustrator and social activist amongst many others. It was a warm Monday evening and the theme for the night was Thai. And Jade meticulously curated the night and invited Aom, the chef. Aom is a professional Thai chef who’s owned a restaurant in Thailand but since moved to Cape Town a years ago. She now cooks for a renowned Thai restaurant in the Cape.  Aom is a lady of few words but her food speaks amorously to the discerning palate. All in all, it was a night of great memories, strangers- turned friends and ingestion of amazing food. Here’s to the first ever Fork, Knife & Glass outside of Durban.  Thank you Cape Town, thank you Food Jam, thank you Tani Pehl for the camera work. Thank you to the attendees.

TAKE IT TO THE STREETS

The Maboneng Precint hosted a lunch on the street some months ago. I've always been gunning to hosting a dinner table right there on a street as a way of showing folks that the streets are very much part of who we are. They're a part of our houses that we cannot hide from the public.

We are busy organising a dinner on Florida rd this next weekend. It's frantic, it's fun and most importantly, it's possible.

This is what a dinner on the street would look like, the Maboneng version.
